October 11, 2012 marks the first annual International Day of the Girl, a movement to celebrate our little ladies and promote their rights to equality, advancement and opportunity. Spearheading the efforts to pass this resolution through the United Nations was none other than a group of 12 year old girls. The young women were part of Schools Girls Unite, an organization centered on expanding the freedom of girls everywhere through education and leadership. The importance of this day symbolizes a culmination in teamwork by many educational, literacy and advocacy groups to bring attention to the plight of girls under 18 years old all over the world.
A great organization lending its voice to promote the Day of the Girl movement is the literacy nonprofit LitWorld. Creating a rousing campaign called Stand Up For Girls, they are rallying for every girl’s right to receive a quality education and championing the right of all girls to be Fierce, Fearless and Free. They offer many ways to get involved from signing their pledge to hosting your own Stand Up for Girls event. If you are looking for more ways to promote the awesomeness of girls, draft your own Day of the Girl proclamation.
