We've all been there – the commercial break during the evening news, or driving along listening to the radio – when an unassuming advertisement suddenly gets us all choked up. The following clips aren't just commercial pursuits – each of them has a gripping story and its own special, touching message to share.

1. FATHER AND SON BUILDING
There's nothing quite like the sight of a father and son hard at work on a project – especially something creative like building Lego. This ad draws on special family memories, and probably stirs up a few for us all.

2. A 25-YEAR REUNION
When Saroo Brierley was five years old, he was separated from his family, ended up in an Indian orphanage and was adopted by an Australian family. 25 years later, he uses Google Earth and distant childhood memories to ultimately reunite with his family in India. The clip is incredibly moving, and also features some impressive cinematography.

3. MORE THAN MEDICATION
This Pfizer commercial – produced back in 2008 - is an oldie but a goodie. The simple video shows a scruffy teenager working on a massive outdoor graffiti project, for a very good reason.

4. DADDY'S LITTLE GIRL
Touching and to the point, this 60-second Extra gum ad follows a loving father and his daughter from childhood to adulthood - culminating with her moving out of her parent's home for the first time. Poignant for parents and children alike.

5. BEER WITH HEART
Friendship is the focus of this powerful Guinness beer ad, with a group of men in wheelchairs playing a rowdy game of basketball. When the game ends, only one man remains in his wheelchair as his friends walk off the court. A simple and yet moving act of friendship.

6. THE GIFT OF GIVING
This masterpiece of a commercial for Thai telecom company TrueMoveH encourages acts of kindness – telling the story of a kind-hearted restaurateur and the good deed that ends up saving his life. The ad sends a lovely, non-commercial message: "giving is the best communication."
