A piece of paper, a felt pen and a child’s imagination are the fuel behind Face This, an organization that creates designer t-shirts from the drawings of children in Indonesia. Partnering with well-known artists who use the children’s drawings as a basis to design unique and funky t-shirts, the Netherlands-based initiative donates proceeds to support local schools and educational programs in Indonesia. Started in 2008, the good doing operation is the brainchild of Jos van der Hoek and his girlfriend Jelka Priem. The couple traveled to Indonesia to visit Jos’ home country as he was born in Indonesia and adopted when he was two months old. Jelka, a teacher, was inspired to help the children in need by finding a way to support small schools, and thus the idea was born. Face This has already donated over forty-seven thousand euros to building and renovating three Indonesian schools. Now in full swing with fresh new designs, the focus for 2014 is selling enough tees to buy and renovate an orphanage that is in danger of being sold, ensuring that the children who live there will have a brighter future.
