Literacy is a pressing world issue with around 796 million people still lacking basic literacy skills. This is a pretty daunting number, but a cool new digital initiative can help change that statistic.
We Give Books is a free website with a simple premise: for every book you read on their site, a book will be donated to a literacy charity. The books on the website aren’t lengthy novels, rather reading material that is appropriate for kids up to ten years old. Once you complete your reading, users can designate where they would like their book to be donated from a list of literacy campaigns, each with a targeted donation goal.
Created by the Penguin Group and the Pearson Foundation, We Give Books allows anyone with an internet connection and some goodwill the opportunity to give the gift of literacy.
