It's amazing how a small gesture can go such a long way (themighty)

Sometimes all it takes to make someone’s day is a pat on the back, a smile, a kind word – taking one extra second to do something positive for someone else. For Bekah Georgy, this small gesture was a single word of encouragement scrawled on her Starbuck’s cup – “Smile!!”

Bekah has been battling anorexia for over half of her life and was on her way back from a disheartening doctor’s appointment and therapy session. On especially bad days, sometimes all she can manage to drink is coffee, which is what brought her to Starbucks.

In her letter to the barista published in The Mighty, Bekah expresses her gratitude for bringing hope to the hopeless: “A simple act of kindness can mean the world to someone….I plan to pass this hope along. So barista, thank you. Thank you for turning my day around.”

Though, in essence, this is a story about a small gesture that brought a smile to someone’s face, it’s also an implicit call to action. Bekah says you never know what someone may be going through: “when you look at me, you might assume I’m happy, bubbly, outgoing and full of life. But you don’t really see the complete me.” So why not pat someone on the back, give them a smile, tell them a kind word? That one extra second it takes you to do something positive for someone else may mean the world to them.
