The successful, award-winning New York City-based Blue Marble Ice Cream has opened the first ice cream shop ever in Butare, Rwanda. Sweet Dreams, the Rwandan branch of Blue Marble, is the delicious initiative of the company's nonprofit arm, Blue Marble Dreams, who dreamt up the concept of ice cream as a vehicle for change.
Born out of an encounter between the head of the first female Rwandan drumming troupe, Odile Gakire Katese (Kiki), and the owners of Blue Marble, Alexis Miesen and Jennie Dundas, Sweet Dreams goes way beyond tasty ice cream: it is a source for hope and joy and provides much needed educational and economic opportunities for women in the Butare community.
