9 Great Ways to Reenergize Yourself Without Coffee

There are many ways to re-energize during the day without having to pick up a coffee or sugary snack.

Feeling energized is empowering, invigorating, and gratifying. When we’re energized, we can set out to do the things we want to get done, be with the people we love, and properly exercise our brains and bodies. However, we all experience a drop in energy at some point during the day.

For some that time comes in the morning, when getting out of bed seems like a mission to Mars, for others it comes in the afternoon right before that important meeting. The important thing to remember is like most everything in life, this too will pass! And not just because of coffee! There are many ways to re-energize during the day without having to pick up a coffee or sugary snack.

1. Move

Whether it’s a small exercise by your desk or a quick walk, moving can help wake you up.  If you work at a desk, try to get up even for 2 minutes every 30 minutes to an hour to keep your body active and stimulated. If you can get outside to the fresh air and sunshine, even better!

2. Eat for energy

By eating fruits, vegetables, and whole foods packed with healthy protein and fats, you are fueling your body to maintain energy throughout the day. Avoid sugary and processed foods, which lead to crashing. For a quick boost of vitamins, pick up some superfoods, such as chia seeds or moringa, from the local health food store. Fats from foods like avocados, coconut oil, and olive oil also power the brain and can increase focus and clarity.

3. Breathe

Taking deep breaths into the stomach can help reduce stress and increase energy and focus. There are several unique pranayamas (breathing techniques) that specifically aid in reenergizing the body and mind, such as breathing out of your right nostril.

4. Raw Cocoa

Raw cocoa contains PEA (phenylethylamine) which is shown to increase energy for those who are sensitive to it. It can even affect some people the way a shot of espresso boosts your buzz! Tip to consuming cocoa without all the processed sugar- look for 100% cocoa and add an all-natural sweetener like agave or better yet, mash up a banana!

5. Put on a Beat

Put your headphones on and play some upbeat or uplifting music. If you can find a corner of the office and start dancing- this will be your golden egg! As we’ve written before, the health benefits of dancing are plentiful, and increasing energy and serotonin is definitely part of the game!

6. Switch Mental Tasks

By exercising different parts of the brain, we strengthen neural pathways, which can increase focus and clarity. Find something that you enjoy, such as Sudoku, that will give you a break from work and help recharge your energy.

7. Hydrate

This one is simple, but because we hear it all the time, we don’t necessarily associate it with improved vigor. Dehydration can cause fatigue because a lack of water in your system also means that less oxygen is circulating in your bloodstream. This is yet another reason to start the day with a warm cup of lemon water.

8. Write

Many times we feel exhausted because of the mental clutter that may be stressing us out or weighing us down. Write down the things that are on your mind so that you make room for more focus, presence, and energy. Writing may also stimulate the more creative parts of your brain, leaving you refreshed, and ready to get back into the swing of things.

9. Lunch Wisely

Some foods stress out our digestive systems and exhaust us. Keep a food journal to identify which meals drag you down and which keep you light and on your toes.

Feeling exhausted can be a frustrating feeling, but it’s a normal part of our bodies and minds. Other than the tips above, also make sure you’re sleeping properly at night, aren’t lacking important vitamins and minerals, and that you provide yourself a healthy mental space to take on the day.  At the end of the day, being happy is the most invigorating feeling in the world- so make time for the things that truly make you happy and energy will follow!
