Rosa Parks is one of the most well-known women in the civil rights movement.  Parks helped to bring about badly needed change when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955. This courageous act, according to History.com, inspired the Montgomery Bus boycott, led by Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. The boycott of the city buses lasted 381 days and ended when the US Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional.

Although Parks was already involved in the civil rights movement and worked with the NAACP before her historic stand for freedom, afterwards, she became a symbol of dignity and strength in the struggle to end racial segregation and discrimination, according to the website WeAreTheCity. Parks has been honored as the “the first lady of civil rights” on buses, street signs, postage stamps, and in museums. Her birthday on February 4 has become known as Rosa Parks Day. Here are nine of her most inspiration quotes, just in time for Black History Month.
