According to ancient Indian traditions, each person has seven main chakras that line up along the spine, starting from the base of the spine through to the crown of the head. These chakras are swirling wheels of cosmic energy that connect the body with the spiritual.

Each chakra has its own color frequency, the vibrational energy that manifests into your body and being. At the base of the spine, the root chakra has the lowest red energy frequency, corresponding to your most basic needs, like home, stability, and family. Violet light at the crown chakra has the highest frequency, connecting us to the higher self.

Think of it like a prism, something that absorbs white light and breaks it into a spectrum of colors. Just like a prism, the white light energy of the cosmos flows through you and splits into colors at each chakra. When that energy flows freely, you shine bright and feel balanced “in the flow”. When blocked, certain areas of your life, and within your body, will feel painful and out of balance.

There are many ways to restore the natural flow of light energy through the chakras. Where focus goes, energy flows: when you concentrate on a chakra, you apply healing energy to that chakra. Visualization, yoga postures, breathing exercises, sound healing—all of these practices help release blockages and restore balance.

Affirmations are another method of balancing a specific chakra. Repeating affirmations directs healing energy to restore balance to that aspect of your body, and your life. These powerful statements rewrite the patterns in our subconscious minds and direct healing vibrations to the chakra.

Even if you feel a bit skeptical about chakras, even scientists are finding the benefits of repeating affirmations to manifest positive change:

Research led by Doctoral Candidate Christopher Cascio published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, used functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) to find that affirmations activate the reward centers in the brain; the same areas that react to other pleasurable experiences, like eating your favorite food meal or winning a prize.

“Affirmation takes advantage of our reward circuits, which can be quite powerful,” says Cascio. “Many studies have shown that these circuits can do things like dampen pain and help us maintain balance in the face of threats.”

Affirmations literally rewire the brain to produce beneficial results. Repeating them on a regular basis, perhaps every morning or during your meditation practice, will foster those positive vibrations. You can write them down, repeat them in your mind, or speak them out loud.

If you feel out of balance in a certain area of your life, repeat these affirmations for each chakra:
