In recent decades, Disney's princesses have been role models for young girls - Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine and Ariel the Little Mermaid to name just a few. What these famous figures - the idols of young girls all over the world - have in common are beauty, gentleness, a positive outlook on life and one ambition: to get married.
To add some depth to this glittery phenomenon, award-winning cartoonist David Trumble has given a cast of real-life women such as Marie Curie and Hillary Clinton a Disney makeover – and the results are thought-provoking, indeed.
The project shines a light on the inspirational actions of both historical and modern-day women, including present-day US Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsberg and the pioneer of women’s suffrage Susan B. Anthony. With a splash of color and sparkles, Trumble's illustrations stress the point that good, strong role models are no doubt marketable to young girls.
The graphics – which originally appeared on Trumble's Huffington Post blog and were also posted on his public Facebook profile – stirred up lots of online support. Who knows, maybe we’ll see Rosa Parks or Malala Yousafzai in the next Disney blockbuster!
