There’s nothing in the world that can compare to a mother’s love. Your mom is and always has been there for you to help guide and support you through all of life's challenges and triumphs. With Mother's Day just around the corner, you know you are feeling that urge to pick up the phone and call your mom! Keeping in contact with your mother is not just good for mom, it turns out that maintaining a close relationship with your mother is good for your overall well-being at any age and stage of life.

Stress buster
A University of Wisconsin Madison study revealed that talking to your mother can increase oxytocin, a hormone associated with empathy and bonding and decrease cortisol, the stress hormone. Hearing your mother’s voice can have an intrinsically calming effect on your system, whether you are feeling overwhelmed or just need a quick boost.

A strong bond with your mother can improve your mental health and help you fend off conditions like depression and anxiety. A gallup poll revealed that close to nine out of ten American adults (88 percent) say that their connection with their mother has had a positive influence on them.

According to a blog on Scientific American, the university's study showed that from a group of young girls who were placed in a stressful mathematical testing situation, the girls who spoke with their moms by phone or in-person immediately after the test had higher oxytocin levels and lower stress levels than the girls who did not.

Boost your self-esteem
Having a close connection with your mom is one of the best ways to boost your self esteem, according to the Yolla Calls blog. Low self-esteem can make everything feel more overwhelming. But contact with your mom, who is biologically wired to be your biggest fan and supporter can remind you how important it is to believe in yourself. A healthy bond with your mother can positively impact how you see yourself and help you to live a fuller, richer life.

Telling the truth
Being in contact with your mother is often an opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings and have someone tell you the truth about your situation. This reality check, provided by someone who loves and supports you can be the key to helping you figure out how to take the next best step in your life and deal with a challenging situation, according to the Yolla Calls blog.

Key to success
Time reports that from an early age strong parent-child communication is a crucial element in promoting children’s success. Children learn language skills and grow their vocabularies during conversations with their mothers. When the verbal communication between mothers and children is strong, kids develop their cognitive skills at a faster rate.

Positive mother-child relationships can lead to stronger career development in the future. A close knit relationship with their mothers can help children to learn to be good communicators and skilled at conflict resolution, and help them grow to be confident adults who can successfully navigate career transitions.

Even with all the pressures and chaos of the day-to-day commitments you face as an adult, it remains as important as ever to make an effort to stay closely connected to your mother. So pick up your phone and call your mom today. It can do you a world of good.
