Being a philanthropist does not mean that you need to give away millions of dollars or head up a large foundation with a board of trustees.  But for those looking to enter into the field in an informal way, The Awesome Foundation is a great place to invest your time and energy. With ninety-six local chapters in twenty-one countries from Canada to Qatar, being a member of the Awesome Foundation means that you are charged with supporting cool causes with monthly grants of one thousand dollars. Each chapter operates autonomously and trustees need to contribute one hundred dollars a month in addition to meeting up to review grant submissions. Every month one cool project or its creator is awarded the no-strings attached micro grant based on the interests of the trustees and the project’s potential to be, well you guessed it, awesome. The grants have launched some pretty interesting ventures including Goodnet favorite The Acoustic Guitar Project, a nursing home garden and the Love Lettering Project, a community art initiative in which people write anonymous notes of endearment to places they live and hide the love notes for strangers to find.
