Contrast therapy is an invigorating healing technique trending in the fitness world — it involves immersing in hot and cold water to enhance healing and improve wellbeing. This unique form of therapy is also used among athletes.

It entails alternating between a hot bath and then a cold bath, to support muscle recovery and circulation, according to verywell health. The heat causes blood vessels to dilate, while the cold makes them constrict. This process creates a pumping action that may lower inflammation, reduce pain, and improve the mobility of joints. It may also reduce swelling, muscle fatigue, and spasms.

Contrast therapy is often used to treat joint injuries and accelerate healing after orthopedic surgery. Other injuries that benefit from contrast bath treatments include torn meniscus, ankle and leg fractures, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, hand and finger arthritis, and dislocated elbow. Athletes also use contrast therapy to lower post-exercise muscle soreness and support recovery, helping them stay on track with training routines.

Contrast Therapy by a Professional
Contrast therapy is often done by a physical therapist. In a professional setting, there may be two whirlpool baths (hot and cold) or a hot whirlpool bath plus a cooling tub. The injured body part is first submerged in the hot water for three to four minutes, sometimes accompanied by gentle motion exercises using the affected joint.

This is followed by submerging the body part in a cold whirlpool bath or tub for one minute, during which you will let the joint relax without moving it. This hot-and-cold cycle is repeated for a time span of 20 to 30 minutes.

Contrast Therapy on Your Own
Contrast bath therapy can also be done by yourself in your own free time, though it’s important to check with a doctor first to ensure it’s safe, Healthline explains. You need two containers or tubs, towels, and a thermometer to ensure the correct temperatures of the water.

At home, the process involves filling one basin with water that is 95 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit (35 to 45 degrees Celsius) and another with water that is 50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 15 degrees Celsius). Dip the affected area or your whole body in the warm container for one to three minutes, then immediately switch to the cold basin for one minute. Repeat for a total of 20 minutes, completing the process with a cold-water dip.

Recovery for Muscle and Mood
After a hot and cold immersion, you may feel healed in both body and mind, according to a blog on ReGen. Physically, the increased circulation that is caused by switching from hot to cold helps deliver nutrients to muscles while getting rid of lactic acid buildup, relieving fatigue, and healing sore muscles.

Beyond these physical benefits, contrast therapy may offer significant mental health advantages. By encouraging the release of endorphins, it can leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated. Switching between temperatures also promotes mindfulness and a sense of calm — and it may even boost your mental clarity and improve your mood.

Contrast therapy is a unique form of healing, offering both physical rejuvenation and mental restoration. For athletes seeking faster recovery, people managing chronic pain, and those looking to enhance their wellness routine, this is a powerful and accessible therapy. All-natural, contrast therapy offers healing for mind and body using the simple power of hot and cold.
