The school year has just begun for kids across the United States, marking the start of a new year to learn and grow. While kindergarten is the first formal year of education, 60% of American children from low-income neighborhoods lag behind their peers in affluent communities, leaving them at a disadvantage when they start their schooling. Jumpstart is a national nonprofit committed to changing that statistic by training college students and volunteers to work with preschool kids to strengthen their language and literacy skills before they enter kindergarten.
October 3 marks Jumpstart’s national campaign, Read for the Record, in which millions across the country will read the children’s book Otis– shining the spotlight on the importance of early childhood education. Since 2006 the annual Read for the Record campaign has distributed more than 1.2 million books for kids in low income areas in addition to engaging over nine million children.
In partnership with the Pearson Foundation, Jumpstart invites you to hop on the literacy train this October - by reading the delightful book Otis, making a pledge or attending an event - and be part of a movement to spread literacy!
