It’s no secret that there are thousands of animals waiting patiently in shelters to get adopted. Though we may fall in love with one sweet dog, it’s hard to notice all the loyal animals also wishing for a home. Until now, that is. Darius Brown, a 12-year-old from New Jersey, sought to create a way to help dogs and cats get noticed and adopted at a faster rate. His project is an endearingly creative venture in bowties, where he designs and makes each bow tie and then sends them to animal shelters to attract visitors’ attention.

Darius Brown, a compassionate and empathetic individual, used his talents to create a positive impact after hearing of the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma in 2017. Animals across the country were left without homes, and a lack of resources and space at animal shelters meant they’d be subjected to euthanasia.

As an animal lover, Darius wanted a way to encourage people to adopt these pets, so when was just 11, he founded his own company; pet couture line, “Beaux & Paws,” which designed fashionable bow ties for people and their pets. And although much younger than many of his entrepreneurial peers, Darius already understood the value and importance of giving back; he donated many of his pieces to adoption and animal shelters across the US and the United Kingdom.

Darius’ irresistible pet makeovers have been featured in several publications and TV shows, and in 2018, former President of the United States Barack Obama honored the entrepreneur with letter of recognition, where he praised him for his positive contribution:

"From founding Beaux and Paws to lifting up the lives of those around you, it’s clear you are doing your part to look out for your fellow citizens. And I trust you take tremendous pride in all you have accomplished. As long as you stay engaged in the world around you, continue looking for ways to help others and never give up on yourself, I’m confident our future will be bright."
