Karl Lagerfeld, one of the world's most iconic fashion designers, who spent decades as the creative director of Chanel, died Tuesday, February 19, in Paris. He was 85 years old.

For most of his life, Lagerfeld was one of the world’s most visible designers. He was the creative mastermind behind Chanel since he joined the company in 1983, and worked as the creative director of the Italian fashion house Fendi. Despite his name being synonymous with high fashion, he didn't shy away from simplicity and was the first haute couture designer to collaborate with a fast-fashion company.

Lagerfeld was notoriously restless and even old age couldn't stop him from continuing his vision and his influence on the fashion and beauty industry has been monumental - to say the least.

And yet, despite his glamorous life, Lagerfeld remained rather unimpressed with his fame. Just two months before his death, he stressed how little his legacy meant to him. Dismissing rumours he was working on his memoirs, this is what he had to say:
