Most of us are used to the yearly celebration of Earth Day, but the environmental movement only started in 1970. Created as a reaction to uncontrolled oil spills and other ecological no-nos, Earth Day started out as a call to action; it became a global event in 1990.

In honor of Earth Day 2012, here are three ecologically minded Tumblr blogs that we think you will enjoy:

Climate Change: The stated goal of the environmental consultant and blogger Michael Cote is to punch climate in the face. That he does, with gleaned articles, pictures and videos centered on reducing the risks of environmental effects due to climate change.

Local Food Lab: Highlighting cool food initiatives, Local Food Lab is not only a nifty blog but is also an incubator for sustainable food and agriculture startups. Housed in Palo Alto, CA, the Lab offers programs, workspace and professional advice to upcoming food entrepreneurs.

The Green Urbanist: Based in Chicago, The Green Urbanist posts about environmental public policy including bicycle advocacy.
