Canines sashay and shante as the subjects of five compelling photography projects that will make anyone, dog lover or not, swoon.

1. BLACK DOGS PROJECT

PHOTOGRAPHER: Fred Levy
WHAT’S HAPPENING: After conversations with people who work at animal shelters and pet stores, Levy was informed that black dogs are less likely to be adopted than other dogs. In an effort to bring attention to black dogs all over, Levy started photographing noir pups against a black background. Social media has helped the cause and spawned a blog entitled I Love Black Dogs in which people send in photos of their beloved black pets.

2. WET DOG

PHOTOGRAPHER: Sophie Gamand
WHAT’S HAPPENING: Just like kids, there are some dogs who dread getting into a bath and being rubbed down with soapy suds. Gamand’s series of portraits of dogs being bathed shows the humanlike expressions of the mutts, revealing how they really feel about bath time.

3. NICE NOSING YOU

PHOTOGRAPHER: Elke Vogelsang
WHAT’S HAPPENING: Who can resist a wet dog nose? Using her three dogs as models, Vogelsang set out to snap their lovely snouts, uploading new photos on her Flickr account.

4. SHAKE

PHOTOGRAPHER: Carli Davidson
WHAT’S HAPPENING: Flying fur, jowl flapping and general cuteness is what the pictures show as dogs are captured in slow motion shaking water off themselves. To witness it in real time, check out the video here.

5. FIRST SNIFF

PHOTOGRAPHER: Mother London
WHAT’S HAPPENING: Parodying the viral video First Kiss which showed apparent strangers meeting and kissing for the first time, Mother London decided to feature dogs sniffing one another.  The results are hilarious complete with awkward glances and excited tail wagging.
