It’s summertime and you know what that means. It's time to embrace the heat, bask in the sunshine and create some unforgettable memories. Don’t let the scorching temperatures get you down. Here are some fantastic ways to stay fresh and refreshed to make the most of this sizzling season.

Stay hydrated

As you know, hydrating is crucial, but who said the only way to do that is through drinking water? According to Healthline, you can choose foods that have a high water content and enjoy the hydrating benefits that way as well. Some foods that are water-rich include watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, peaches, oranges, cucumbers and lettuce. And some drinks that have a high water content and are a great choice for staying hydrated are skim milk and coconut water. So enjoy these foods and drinks in their glorious natural forms or in smoothies, and reap the hydrating benefits.

Check in with the clock

It is important to go outdoors and keep doing the physical activity you are used to, both for your physical and mental health. However, you don’t have to do these things during the hottest times of the day. In fact, it is recommended to do physical activity and enjoy the sun during the cooler parts of the day, such as the early morning and late afternoon. The Red Cross explains that this will help avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke while still getting you your exercise, vitamin D and fresh air.

Choose cotton

Did you know that the material of your clothing can make a big difference in terms of your body temperature? The blog Super Savvy Me lists some fabrics like polyester, lycra and wool that are better suited for cold weather. Instead, go for fabrics like cotton, linen and bamboo, which will help you stay cool and comfortable in the heat. According to the company American Tent, you might even want to choose cotton and cooler fabrics for your sheets and linens to avoid sweating and overheating while you sleep.

Scream for ice…pops!

Ice cream might cool you off momentarily, according to National Geographic, but over time it might actually make you hotter as it takes a lot of energy to break down the yummy treat. Instead, go for ice pops, which are higher in water content and keep you cool. You can choose fruit based ice pops that are healthy and hydrating (see the list of hydrating fruit above). And don't forget to enjoy yourself while eating them.

Water, water, water

Yes, drink the water, but not only that. Go to the pool, take a cool shower, have a water fight, turn on the sprinklers, or just pour some water on yourself, your friends and your kids. And have some fun while you are at it! Isn’t that what summer is about?
