Being a teenager can be tough. But for LGBT youth, it can prove to be quite a challenge as many are bullied or ostracized for their sexual orientation. The It Gets Better Project shines as a light at the end of the tunnel, showing LGBT teens that they are not alone. The project was inspired by a 2010 YouTube video by columnist and author Dan Savage and his partner Terry Miller. The couple, in response to an increase in gay youth taking their own lives due to bullying, wanted to spread the message that while it may seem tough now, it does indeed get better. The video immediately went viral and sparked an outpouring of support and encouragement from celebrities, politicians, organizations and fellow teens.
The international movement has since gained traction and serves as a platform for gay youth seeking resources, support or morale. The website provides ways for supporters, gay and straight alike, to join together to show our youth that their future can be bright and joyful. [Source: It Gets Better Project]
