Puppies need warmth, and nurturing from their mothers to thrive and grow. Sometimes they need a little help from their human families but most of all they need to be wanted.

This didn’t happen  for Dennis, a tiny terrier who was born deaf and half blind, reported SWNS. At just six-weeks-old he was abandoned and dumped into the trash in Didcot, England. But this badly injured pup who was near death now has a second chance.

Saving the Pup
The severely injured puppy was also suffering from severe cuts and weighed only 1.75 kg when he was rescued. Sadly, he was getting weaker and weaker. He was rushed to a veterinarian and then collected by the dog warden who called the Blue Cross Rescue Centre in the Cotswolds to see if they would take him.

“When I went to collect him from the stray kennels, I didn’t expect him to be so small. He fitted in a cat carrier – he was absolutely tiny, Noosh Ashmead-Bartlett, admissions coordinator at Blue Cross Burford said in a news release from the organization. “I’ve never seen a dog of his age quite so little and thin, and with so many injuries as well.”

While it is unknown if he sustained his injuries in the bin or before, he needed urgent care, and love. According to the news release, Before his wounds could be treated, Dennis had to be cleaned but he was afraid of the water, so he was washed with towels. After he was clean, the staff saw a large wound on his side that was hidden by dirt. His wounds were treated by antiseptic ointment, but his emotional wounds would take longer to heal.

Rehabbing for Rehoming
While the staff had experience taking care of deaf dogs and caring for blind dogs, Dennis presented a unique combination. But since being in a kennel was not conducive to his health, he was moved to a foster home.

There he could learn to navigate his way around and he began to be steady on his paws. “He really just came into his own in foster. As time went on, he became quite confident, and his personality very quickly came out,” said Ashmead-Bartlett.

After being fostered for 24 days, Dennis left the care of Blue Cross for a furever home and family, Derbyshire, reported SWNS. Dennis has a home just in time for Christmas. He is one of more than 25,000 pets that were fostered and adopted through Blue Cross in the last five years but there are still many pets who need homes.

This story could have had a vastly different outcome but thanks to caring people, he has a new lease on life.
