Life’s journeys aren’t always bump free. Sometimes, like when learning how to ride a bike, you fall off, but then you pick yourself up and get back on the bike and try again. The same goes for most things in life.
Anytime you set a goal in life, you will face obstacles and challenges, reported Forbes. Some goals, like becoming a professional athlete or getting a book published, may not be accomplished. But just like the old saying, “If you have never failed, you have never lived,” failing at something can be the beginning of a new success.
So, what should you do when you fail at something – a class, a work project, or even opening a business? You need to turn it around and make it a learning experience. Here are five ways you can turn failure into success.
Stay Positive
Having a positive mental attitude will help you pick yourself up after failing. You need to be able to accept that you were not successful and move-on. Understanding that not everyone wins a race or aces a test will help you be more resilient and motivate yourself to try again.
Identify Mistakes
Being able to identify what you did wrong will help you avoid making the same mistakes in the future. Knowing what went wrong will help you analyze what failed and to come up with solutions. People – and businesses – who are the most successful have probably failed many times, but they learned from their mistakes and tried again.
Enjoy the Process
People who enjoy the process and are motivated by small wins will burn out less than people who are pursuing something that they do not enjoy doing, according to a blog on Psychology Today. People who are process-orientated are fueled by what they are doing and not just by what they hope to achieve.
Be Flexible
Flexibility is important to achieving any goal. Having the ability to reframe a problem and find a new solution is an important way to be successful. If you are rigid and cling to one way of doing something, you are less likely to be able to pick yourself up and try again if you fail.
Try Again
Having the right mindset will allow you to try again and again until you get it right, according to Forbes. That’s because every time you try, you get better. Every failed attempt shows you what will not work. Thomas Edison was known to have said that he didn’t fail 10,000 times but he found 10,000 ways that didn’t work. So don’t be afraid to fail, it is just one step on the road to success.
