Move over acai, kiwiberries are claiming their place as the number one superfruit. Kiwiberries are the smaller, easily edible cousin of the fuzzy kiwifruit that has become a lunchbox staple.

Both fruits are packed with nutrition, but kiwiberries – which resemble large grapes – contain more vitamins and nutrition than the larger fruit, according to New Atlas. That’s why more and more people are adding this berry to their diet.

Small and Sweet
Kiwiberries are sweet, tangy, and juicy -- slightly sweeter than kiwis.  They’re ripe when their skin is dark green and slightly wrinkled. They can be sliced into salads, blended into smoothies, or layered into desserts like tarts and parfaits, making them a delicious way to get the nutrients.

Unlike tropical kiwifruit, the berries prefer a cold climate, and their new popularity is spreading cultivation to Oregon, Washington State and cooler sections of Europe and South America. But the growing season is short – September and October are the only months they can be found on store shelves.

The good news is the berries can be frozen for up to 12 months without losing any of their nutritional properties. So, to get all the health benefits, it’s best to stock up in the fall and still have some in the freezer when September rolls around again.

It’s in the Skin
Kiwiberries are one of  the top superfoods, according to a study by Piotre Latocha published in the journal Plant Foods Human Nutrition.  The researchers found that kiwiberries offer a promising treatment for some cancers and health issues involving the gastrointestinal system, and hypercholesterolemia.

In addition to anti-aging phenolics, kiwiberries are loaded with vitamin B and are a great source of lutein, which keeps vision sharp. The berry’s smooth skin is similar to a grape’s. Like grapes, they can be eaten skin and all for a quick snack. Scientists have found the skin contains more of the berry’s beneficial properties than the flesh.

Loaded with Health Benefits
The FruitPeople blog takes a deep dive into the kiwiberry’s nutrients and benefits. The berry’s high level of vitamin C  boosts the immune system, reducing the risk of common illnesses such as colds and flu.

The fiber content of kiwi berries aids digestion and prevents constipation, making them a great choice for those looking to improve their gut health.

Thanks to its antioxidants, particularly vitamin C and vitamin E, kiwiberries can support the maintenance of healthy, youthful skin by fighting free radicals and promoting collagen production.

Kiwiberries contribute to heart health by helping regulate blood pressure and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease by providing a large dose of potassium. This shows that big benefits come in very small packages.
