One of the most important things for parents is to know your child feels safe and free to be themselves. As your child’s caregiver, the words and phrases you use have the ability to positively impact the way they see the world and walk through life.
In the past, phrases were used that weren’t always the most beneficial to children’s wellbeing. However, a new generation of parents is choosing to raise their children differently, TODAY reports. It’s all part of a touching trend on social media that’s breaking cycles and showing that through empowering children, parents can change the world.
Millennials Reject Outdated Parenting Phrases
The trend involves parents sitting with their kid and asking them to complete toxic parenting phrases used in the past. But thanks to positive parenting choices — children are answering in the most wholesome of ways.
The trend appears to have started with Denstini Davis, a 32-year-old mother, who was driving with her 7-year-old daughter, Phoenix Scot, when she began asking her to finish classic parenting lines. The video went on to inspire parents to play the same game with their kids.
In one TikTok video that captured around 10 million views, user @milliemaeeeeee says “Children should be seen…” In an adorable answer, her son replies “at the park” instead of “not heard,” according to Parents. When she then says “I’ll give you something…”, her son jumps in to say “special” instead of “I’ll give you something to cry about.”
In another viral video Emily Fauver, a mother, says “I brought you into this world, I can…” only to have her daughter respond, “take care of you,” instead of “I can take you out of it.” Users were quick to jump in to show their support saying “I AM CRYING. This is so freaking healing” and “Yes thank u for breaking the cycle, ily.”

The Positive Impact of the Trend
While the trend is likely to have put smiles on faces of people across the internet, it has a much deeper impact. It may help parents who might have hard or even traumatic childhoods find peace during their own parenting journey.
According to Motherly, the trend also has the potential to influence humanity for the better starting with its impact on the youngest generations. By embracing loving language, parents can create deep connections, build resilience, and nurture a strong sense of self-worth in their children.
The trend reflects the potential for parents to allow their children to thrive through letting them feel seen, valued, and loved unconditionally. It shows that just by the words they use, parents can shape how children see themselves, and create a more compassionate and caring world.
