World's Loneliest Sheep Now Expecting Twins
Just two years after Fiona’s dramatic rescue from an isolated Scottish cliff.
Two years ago, Fiona was Britain's loneliest sheep living on the bottom of a cliff. Now two years after her rescue, she is happy, healthy, and expecting twins
The joyful news was shared on Christmas day, reported GB News. The news was kept under wraps so that Fiona wouldn’t be overly stressed, according to Ben Best, the manager of Dalscone Farm where Fiona lives.
“Fiona's having twins. What have we done? We have actually got her in lamb. The pressure is on,” Best posted on the farm's Dalscone Daily Facebook page.
A Fairy Tale Rescue
Fiona first gained the world’s attention when she was spotted by Jillian Turner, a kayaker, in 2021 at the base of a cliff on the coast of Sutherland. Turner saw her again two years later at Cromarty Firth in the Scottish Highlands, reported The Guardian in 2023.
“She saw us coming and was calling to us along the length of the beach following our progress until she could go no further. She finally turned back, looking defeated,” Turner told The Guardian.
Turner tried to get help for the sheep from various agencies without any success. So, she launched a campaign to rescue the ewe and received over 55,000 signatures, according to Express.
Five local farmers planned a rescue mission. They brought a truck-mounted winch and rope to bring her up what was an incredibly steep slope.
Although she was very fat and covered with huge amounts of fleece, Fiona was sent to the Dalscone Farm, a park near Dumfries, to heal and learn how to be a sheep again.
Fiona’s Recovery
When Fiona arrived at the farm after her ordeal, she didn’t bond well with the other sheep. “She doesn't socialize very well with other sheep, I think it is just from being down by herself and isolated for over two years at the bottom of that cliff... she has kind of forgotten how to be a sheep,” Best said Express.
But she finally bonded with two ewes, Dozi and Aamy and has been doing well at the farm. She was put on a strict diet to shed the excess weight, and she was given hormones to help her conceive. After that she was paired with a ram and nature took its course.
Fiona is now expecting twins that are due in February 2026. The staff is monitoring her condition and undergoing regular blood tests. After the twins are born, they will remain with their mother at the farm. Fiona will never be lonely again.
