One of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions is to shed a couple of pounds, but with the cold weather setting in, it can be pretty hard to get motivated.  A new app, DietBet, is looking to change that by providing an incentive that’s pretty hard to resist – money!
The social dieting app turns losing weight into a game by giving participants 28 days to lose 4% of their starting weight. Here’s how it works: users can join or create a game, participants contribute a certain amount of money – the larger the group the bigger the pot – and everyone who reaches their target weight gets a piece of the cash pie. In addition to the potential cash flow, users can use the app to track their progress, get expert fitness tips, or garner support from family and friends by sharing their weight loss successes.
Now you may be shaking your head and wondering about all the loopholes here, like how do you prove that someone actually lost the weight? Each participant must send proof of their weight by confidentially submitting a photo of themselves on the scale to the DietBet referees.
The DietBet app, combining healthy competition with a cash incentive, has been shown to work with 90% of participants losing weight and winners shedding up to 9 pounds on average. [Source: DietBet]
