Good News for Furry Creatures at New York Fashion Week! | In a major win for animals, its catwalks will feature fake fur only.

In a positive move warmly welcomed by animal welfare advocates, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), overseeing the Fashion Calendar for New York Fashion Week (NYFW), announced in December 2025 that it will stop promoting animal fur at all Official NYFW events.

As the fashion trade journal, WWD, seen as a “fashion bible” for the industry,                      this animal-friendly move was announced in collaboration with Humane World for Animals and Collective Fashion Justice, following several years of engagement with these animal  advocacy groups.

A Chorus of Approval from Animal Welfare Groups and the Public
World Animal Protection views this NYFW decision as following on from decades of pressure from animal welfare supporters sounding the alarm about the cruelty inherent in the fur industry. It also notes that it was announced shortly after a fur production ban in Poland, until now the second-largest producer of fur in the world, as well as similar steps by other fashion weeks happening in world capitals.

The Humane World for Animals’ blog  also points out the recent announcement from publishers Conde Nast, the parent company of Vogue, Vanity Fair and Glamour,on its new fur-free policy.

Important too is the considerable investment in plant-based textiles, durable faux furs, and other sustainable fur alternatives that has led to these materials already being used at scale in luxury fashion. This inclusion is seen as evidence that creativity can coexist with compassion.

The public response has been overwhelmingly positive too. A talkback to the above Facebook post from Jessica Sheil, for instance,  proclaims: “This is a huge leap in the right direction. This proves that public opinion can change and fashion can be beautiful without harming innocent lives. I love it.”

September 2026 is When the New NYFW Policy Starts
Kicking off with the September 2026 NYFW, the CFDA will no longer allow animal fur to feature in collections on the Official NYFW Schedule.

The months-long timeline is viewed as a chance for designers to adjust their materials to comply with the new fur-free policy. And as Teen Vogue details, the ban on promoting fur during NYFW will extend to its social media calendar and website as well as its main fashion calendar.

A media release from the CFDA stresses that by taking this position, the fashion body hopes to inspire American designers to think more deeply about the fashion industry’s impact on animals. It also acknowledges that consumers are shunning products associated with animal cruelty, and that it wants to position American fashion as a leader in animal compassion as well as material innovation.

World Animal Protection qualifies that the ban applies to fur from animals farmed or trapped for their pelts such as mink, fox, chinchilla, and rabbits. An exemption remains for fur sourced through Indigenous subsistence hunting traditions.

Copycatting Fashion Weeks on the Global Catwalk Stage
Significantly, NYFW is not the first major international fashion event to make a fur-free commitment. It is following  in the footsteps of others such as London, Melbourne, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin and Stockholm,  who have withdrawn their support for an industry that Humane World for Animals estimates kills 20 million animals annually.

However, as fashion blog Sizebay emphasizes, as one of the big four fashion weeks occurring in the fashion capitals of the world, alongside London, Milan and Paris, what happens at NYFW receives sizable media attention, while setting the stage for the global fashion industry.

Hailing it as one of the most significant steps so far in the global movement towards ethical fashion, World Animal Protection puts it like this: “NYFW will go fur free in 2026, joining other major fashion weeks that have already rejected real fur. This decision strengthens global efforts to end cruelty in the fashion industry and supports a future where designers choose ethical and sustainable materials that protect animals.”

This organization also emphasizes that several leading designers who already show at NYFW, such as Michael Kors and Coach, removed fur from their collections years ago. In addition, it spotlights a parallel trend in the industry seeing fashion houses abandoning fur skins while focusing on alternatives that prioritize animal welfare and sustainability.

Further, NYFW is known for its energy, edgy designs and strong ties to pop culture, so animal welfare advocates anticipate that its anti-fur stance will lead to more copycat fur bans in global fashion.
