If you live in a city, where do you go to find peace and quiet? As more people are flocking to major cities, finding such a spot can be a challenge among all the hustle and bustle of urban life. The smart folks over at Cambridge University are fully aware of this dilemma and have launched Urban Gems - a crowdsourcing project aiming to find the most peaceful and happy places in the city. Focusing on London, the website asks people to compare two views of the city to assess which one best represents one of the three qualities - beautyhappiness and quiet. By collecting all this user data, researchers hope to compile a comprehensive ranking of delightful places in the city for busy Londoners to visit when they want to chill out. While the project was launched with images culled from Google Streetview, there are plans to allow residents to upload and tag their own pictures in order to create an organic database that matches Londoners with the urban oasis most suited to them.
Urban Gems joins other initiatives focused on finding relaxation in urban centers such as Goodnet favorite Stereopublic - a crowdsourcing app to locate quiet and tranquil spots in the midst of city chaos.
