Apr 19, 2015

The first photo in this 40-year photo series was taken "on a whim," when photographer Nicholas Nixon was visiting his wife's family in the summer of 1975. The photo is casual and penetrating - and when the sisters saw the result they agreed to have a similar photo taken every year.

Thus began The Brown Sisters project, which has been shown in galleries and exhibitions around the world over the past 40 years. The series documents the slow, graceful aging of the four women, a tribute and testament to the inevitable life events that transformed them in the 365 days between each shot. This three-minute video showcases the 40 photos, telling a universal story in a simple, powerful way.
