Baby Shower At 30,000 Feet: Parents Treated to Impromptu Celebration

After nine challenging years of struggling with infertility, the Moore family was finally complete. In November 2019, Dustin and Caren Moore boarded a Southwest Airlines flight bound for their home in California, with their newly adopted baby daughter in tow. But what should have been a routine flight turned into a once-in-a-lifetime experience, documented by Dustin in a viral Twitter thread.

A kind flight attendant, Jenny, assisted the new parents in finding a place to change their newborn’s diaper. Noting how young their daughter was, Jenny asked why Caren and Dustin were traveling with such a small infant. The Moores briefly shared their adoption story with her. Not long after, another flight attendant named Bobby approached the couple, seemingly confirming their story.

“We repeated the story with a few details, and he congratulated us before walking away,” Dustin wrote. “My wife and I exchanged curious looks, but thought nothing more about it.”

“Then, we heard the intercom,” Dustin continued. “The attendant Bobby came on and announced a special guest on the flight. Our daughter. She’s just been adopted by her parents Caren and Dustin, and is making her way home.” The plane erupted into cheers and applause, stunning the new parents. Seeing the other passengers share in their joy deeply touched Dustin and Caren. “We sat in speechless gratitude as people kept peeking over their chairs to congratulate us,” Dustin recalls.

The cabin crew then moved on to another act of kindness that stunned the Moores.

Anyone with a message for the new parents, from encouragement and congratulations to practical advice, was welcome to write down their thoughts on a napkin. The crew passed out pens and fellow travelers jotted down words of wisdom for the new parents. The notes offered sage advice and hard-won tips for the notoriously challenging early days of childhood.

The outpouring of love from that flight, brought on by the actions of two thoughtfully observant flight attendants… it exceeds my ability to describe what it meant to us. How much those wings and written notes uplifted two new parents determined to love their new daughter. /12

After a few minutes, the cabin crew collected the napkins and read some of their favorites over the intercom: “Enjoy every minute! It goes by so very fast.” “Always tell her you love her.” “Make time for date night.” At the end of the flight, the crew gifted the new parents with the napkins, a keepsake which the family will certainly treasure for a lifetime.

“The hard parts don’t last forever!” reads one napkin. Another passenger shared their own personal story: “I was adopted 64 years ago. Thank you for giving this child a loving family to be part of. Us adopted kids need a little extra love.”

As the family disembarked from the plane, they made their way to the baggage claim tailed by passengers offering more well wishes. Dustin and Caren gathered their suitcases and headed home with their precious “cargo”, homebound as a family for the first time, forever changed by the outpouring of love and support they received from perfect strangers.

After posting his story on Twitter, Dustin ended with a poignant wish for his readers. “I hope you’ll take time to share what is good,” he wrote. “In a world of turmoil, don’t forget to showcase the Bobby’s and Jenny’s, the kind strangers out there. And if they don’t cross your path, be one. Seek good, or create it.”
