The thing about water is that, while it may pour from the heavens and flow through the rivers - it’s actually a finite resource. Of the 32,500,000 cubic miles of it on earth – only one-hundredth of one percent of the world's water is readily available for human use. Yet, as the world population grows, so does the demand for freshwater, meaning conversation is more important than ever. Going from the global state of water to daily, individual usage, this infographic lays out all the facts - and, of course, shares a few tips for making every drop count.

Water: Every Drop Counts THE BIG PICTURE: 1. There are 1.5 billion trillion liters of water on Earth - equal to 800 trillion Olympic swimming pools. 2. 97% is saltwater, 2% is in the form of polar ice caps, 1% is freshwater. 3. The average American residence uses 100,000 gallons of water per year. BREAKING IT DOWN: 1. 5-minute shower = 35 liters of water. 2. Flushing a toilet = 8 liters of water. 3. Producing 1 pair of jeans = 10,000 liters of water. 4. Producing 1 kg of beef = 15,000 liters of water. DOING YOUR PART: 1. Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth. 2. Check faucets and pipes for leaks. 3. Use your dishwasher and clothes washer for only full loads.
