According to HuffPost, veterinarians look at a dog’s overall well-being, habits, and cues when assessing happiness. While every dog has its own unique personality, many signs of happiness are common. Discover five signs your pooch is thriving, along with tips to support their happiness and strengthen your bond. 

Their Basic Needs Are Met
Joy begins with proper care. Dogs need adequate food and water, comfort, health care, and surroundings to help them feel safe and calm. Creating an emotionally safe environment is also essential for your canine to thrive. Every pup has a different comfort level around people. If you have a shy dog, you can advocate for them by letting people know about their boundaries. 

They Have a Set Routine
While dogs may enjoy new experiences, they also appreciate predictability, Dr. Kate Anderson, a veterinary behaviorist at Cornell University’s Duffield Institute for Animal Behavior in New York, tells HuffPost. She adds that they find it challenging when their owners’ schedules change. While it’s common to take a trip or return to the office, sticking to your pet’s routine as much as possible or creating a dependable new rhythm may help them adjust.   

They Enjoy Enriching Activities
Regular opportunities to exercise, play, and think can support a dog’s quality of life. Playing with a puzzle toy or taking part in a training class can give dogs the mental stimulation they need. In fact, training not only keeps your pup’s mind sharp — it can strengthen your bond.    

Their Body Language is Calm
Take note of your dog’s body language. Happy-go-lucky dogs normally carry their bodies without tension, Aimee Warner, a resident veterinarian at Waggel, tells Parade Pets. Look for softness through the neck and muscles, a loose posture, and an overall sense of ease. “A wagging tail in a relaxed manner can be an example that indicates this,” Warner says.     

It’s All in the Facial Expressions
One way to tell if your pup feels content is by looking at their face. Pay attention to the “slow blink.” That’s when a dog gently shuts their eyes at a leisurely pace, which may suggest that they feel comfortable and secure in your presence.  

While some canine breeds naturally have a smile-like expression, other dogs may have a similar look when they’re filled with joy. “When a dog is happy, its mouth will be slightly ajar with relaxed lips and the tongue falling naturally into place, not tense,” Warner explains. “The overall appearance is one of ease.”
