A Reverse Bucket List Can Change Your Life

6 Aug 2026 | By Erica Jackson
This practice can increase confidence and gratitude.

For many people, a bucket list is a motivating way to look forward to checking off exciting and fulfilling goals. But what if there were benefits to doing it another way?

That’s the rationale behind a reverse bucket list, Real Simple reports. This creative list is a way to be proud of the life you’ve built. It can also help boost your confidence.

What Is a Reverse Bucket List?
A reverse bucket list is essentially the opposite of a traditional bucket list, Dr. Rachel Loftin, a clinical psychologist and chief clinical officer at Prosper Health, tells Real Simple.

“Instead of focusing on things you hope to accomplish in the future, you reflect on meaningful experiences, challenges you’ve navigated, skills you’ve developed, relationships you’ve built, and moments of growth you’ve already had,” she says.

The Benefits of a Reverse Bucket List
There are numerous benefits of this mindfulness practice, according to Oprah Daily. While it can be easy to compare yourself to others on social media or feel like you haven’t reached all your milestones yet, this activity offers a new perspective.

A reverse bucket list encourages gratitude. This is because it creates “concrete evidence of abundance for our brains,” Dr. Anjali Gowda Ferguson, a clinical psychologist, tells Oprah Daily. That sense of gratitude is associated with less stress and anxiety, better sleep, and improved heart health.

It also positively impacts your confidence level and outlook on life. Recognizing your past successes shows you that you can rise above challenges and achieve new goals.

Looking back on what you’ve accomplished can also help you appreciate your own growth and be less likely to focus on other people’s timelines. It’s a way to acknowledge progress instead of pursuing the next goal.

How to Create a Reverse Bucket List
When starting your reverse bucket list, remember that no achievement is too small to include, according to Real Simple. You can add everyday wins, including taking care of your family, prioritizing your mental health, or setting boundaries.

To bring past experiences back to mind, look through photos, journals, messages, playlists, or social media. You can also use prompts about experiences that changed you for the better, risks you have taken, and achievements that would make your younger self proud. Make sure to update your list regularly so you can look back whenever you need to.

Remember, life isn’t always measured by what lies ahead. Its meaning is also defined by what you have already experienced, the lessons you have learned, and the challenges you have overcome.
