5 Ways to Practice Hygge This Summer

17 Jul 2026 | By Erica Jackson
Enjoy the Danish art of cozy living during the warmer months.

Every season offers its own opportunities to slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Summer invites you to soak in the sunshine, connect with nature, and spend meaningful time with loved ones — making it the perfect time to be present and unplug.

Hygge is a Danish term for coziness, comfort, connection, and contentment, which is commonly associated with the colder months, Vice reports. However, this mindset can be embraced during any season. Discover five creative ways to practice hygge and bring more magic into your summer.

Set Aside Time for Intentional Outdoor Activities
One of the joys of summer is time spent outside. Because of the heat, it’s also important not to tire yourself out. To do this, try slower-paced outdoor activities, including going to a farmers market, listening to birdsong, admiring wildflowers, taking a walk during a cooler part of the day, or mindfully watching the sunset. You can also savor your favorite cold seasonal drink when it’s not too hot outside.

Enjoy Seasonal Food
One of the best ways to connect with a season is by eating seasonal produce or meals associated with that particular time of year. So check out your local farmers market with a friend or family member, and gather for a homemade summer meal. Since sharing meals is a big part of hygge — it’s the perfect way to bring the cozy lifestyle into your summer.

Immerse Yourself in Analog Hobbies
Summer is the best time for picking up analog hobbies, or passion projects that don’t require technology. These experiences will invite more nostalgia and hygge into your life. So take out playing cards, garden, or prepare a tasty summertime treat.

Embrace Community
Outdoor fairs, concerts, and amusement parks invoke a sense of summer nostalgia and connection.

You can also bring the warm feeling of hygge into your summer through an intimate get-together such as a garden party, a picnic or barbecue in the park, or a gathering around a bonfire, according to Apartment Therapy. The key is to keep the event small so that friends, family, or neighbors can easily engage in authentic conversations with one another throughout the gathering.

Bring Summer Hygge Into Your Home
Hygge is just as much about decor as it is about mindset. Bring nature indoors by foraging for wildflowers or using fresh blooms to create a DIY bouquet. You can also create a cozy sitting area to curl up with a book. Ideas include setting up a hammock or an outdoor swing.

Make outdoor areas cozier with pillows, lightweight throws, and books, and arrange furniture to face one another to make conversation easier. Finally, make the most of the abundance of natural light. Open drapes and blinds to let mirrors help spread natural light throughout the room. If the sun is too strong in your home, you can soften it with sheer, diffused panels.
