How Halloween Can Help You Tap Into Self-Expression

Dressing up can inspire creativity and boost confidence.

What are you most excited about this Halloween? Perhaps it’s trick-or-treating or dressing up as your favorite character. From superheroes to spooky creatures, there are endless possibilities.

Halloween offers a fun opportunity for self-expression, CBS News 8 reports. It gives people a playful opportunity to use their imagination. Your costume can even reveal insights about your personality.

Exploring Different Sides of Yourself
Making your own costume may reflect confidence and resourcefulness while giving you a personal way to express yourself. However, the benefits of dressing up during Halloween go even deeper, a blog on Psychology Today explains.

Whether dressing up as a different version of themselves or a hero, people can use Halloween to express traits they usually keep in the background. For someone who’s shy, Halloween might be an exciting opportunity to dress as a bold character and express a more daring side of their personality.

Self-Expression Can Boost Confidence
According to a news release from Cleveland Clinic, psychologist Susan Albers, PsyD, explains that your costume choice may reflect personal desires or aspects of your personality that you don’t typically express. “For example, if you choose a whimsical or funny costume, it may reveal that you want to be less serious or to make people laugh,” Albers adds.

Dressing up may also have another impact. A psychological concept known as “enclothed cognition” suggests that what a person wears can influence how they feel. For example, an individual who dresses as a superhero may realize they feel courageous or self-assured.

Masks or heavy makeup can also be a powerful tool. “If you are wearing a mask or heavy makeup, it may make you feel more anonymous. This lowers our self-consciousness and lowers our inhibition. So, you may act in ways that you don’t normally act day-to-day, and it’s a low-risk situation to explore different parts of your personality,” Albers adds.

How to Unleash Your Creativity
To embrace self-expression, start by thinking about what kind of costume feels meaningful to you personally, according to a blog on Abundance Therapy Center. Perhaps you’re inspired by someone you look up to or a fictional persona that lets you experiment with a different side of yourself. Choosing something with personal significance can be rewarding.

Once you’ve chosen your costume, it’s time to bring it to life. Making it yourself can become another outlet for expression and allow you to process your feelings. The fun doesn’t have to end with wearing your costume. Staying in character and role-playing can help you explore your emotions in a new way. Finally, consider what the experience revealed to you. Reflecting on how you felt in the costume may help you realize something new about yourself along the way.

The positive impact of dressing up doesn’t have to be limited to Halloween. Whether you’re getting ready in the morning or heading to an evening activity, there are endless ways to incorporate self-expression into your routine throughout the year.
